Claudio Oliveira specializes in training piaffe and passage both in hand and with the rider. He has extensive experience starting young horses and with advanced horses. In 2002, he was the Brazilian Champion. Claudio learned his craft in the style of Nuno Oliveira (1925–1989) who is widely acknowledged as a master of the art of dressage. Nuno’s teachings have inspired riders and trainers all over the world to adopt the ‘baroque’ or ‘classical’ style of working with horses.
Claudio believes that horses can learn best when they have a mental understanding of what they are being asked to do. “It is really important to get the horse relaxed when they work” says Claudio. “The piaffe is an easy exercise when you achieve it without force.”
Claudio was born in São Paulo in Brazil. At age 17, he started working for Rocas do Vouga, which is one of Brazil’s largest Lusitano breeding farms. He started the young horses under saddle, and prepared them for shows, sales, auctions, and exhibitions. It was at Rocas do Vouga that Claudio had the opportunity to work with many horses in hand each day. Ananias Macedo (himself a student of Nuno Oliveira) taught Claudio the work in hand, from starting horses in piaffe and passage all the way to training the Grand Prix horse under saddle in piaffe and passage. Claudio also did many clinics in Brazil with Belgian-born Johan Zagers. Claudio worked at Rocas do Vouga for ten years before going independent.
Claudio started visiting Wellington, FL in 2008 when he rode for Rocas do Vouga in the ‘Lusitano Collection’ auctions. In 2011, he moved to the U.S. and lives full-time in Wellington where he rides, trains, teaches, and works horses in hand. He works with top trainers and US and Canadian team riders in Florida to help start the piaffe and passage and to confirm these movements for the show ring. Claudio travels throughout the USA, Canada, & Central America doing clinics.
